Willys Hotchkiss Jeep M201 - 1962

In 2002 I wanted a jeep for my holiday home in France, after looking at lots of rusty old jeeps and jeeps that looked good but had been undersealed or recently painted, I decided to have one built from scratch.
I heard Lys Touts Terrain in France had bought all the jeeps from when the French army had stopped using them.
Although I would have preferred a Willys, the Hotchkiss had been built under license from Willys and were identical bar a few miner differences. LTT had over a hundred of them and when I went there, I was stunned to see so many.
I told them I wanted a jeep with zero rust. Having recently come from the French military, there were many really nice ones and it wasn’t hard to find a rust free, never welded body and chassis.
Over the next year it was totally dismantled and rebuilt with everything reconditioned or new. This included all gauges, switches, hinges, lights, I could go on but basically every part was dismantled, then when time to fit it all back together, every single part was stripped before being fitted to the jeep. I didn’t want to be on holiday, have a problem and then be held to ransom by a French mechanic so I wanted as close as I could get to a new jeep.
During the 18 years I have had it, there have been no breakdowns.
It drives in a straight line, stops straight, has no shakes and doesn’t drip oil or smoke.
I paid over £13,000 in 2002, even though at that time a really nice Willys jeep could be bought for less than half that. I had not asked for an estimated cost and had given them an open cheque book.
I was disappointed with the price, but when I went to collected it, it looked like a new jeep.
Although I thought at the time it was over priced, I don’t now. The job they did was fantastic and there have been no breakdowns. I recently sold my house in France and with an increase in weight, I can’t get behind the wheel so it’s time for it to go. It must be one of the best around, It comes with a brand new set of combat tyres not yet fitted.
Looking at what is currently advertised elsewhere it is a £30k jeep.
That being said, and me not knowing whether they actually sell at those prices, I am looking for as close as I can get to £20,000 and I am happy to listen to all offers as it really needs to go.
£19,500
