01 GN 39 Built 7th April 1977 (British Motoring Industry Heritage Trust certificate in file)
Despatched to CVD Ashchurch 20th April 1977. Info as above plus ‘B’ card, Into service July 1978 Issued to HQ Wales TMP (Transport Motor Pool) Sennybridge February 1979.
Service split between Sennybridge & OSU (Ordnance Support Unit) Thetford.
So only used by units training at those 2 respective camps.
No overseas service. Suspect grill protecting the blue light was fitted for protection during riot/NI training? Cast out of service 30th September 1998 with mileage recorded as 48450. To P.A.Blanchard via MSVL Disposals. Purchased in June 2007 by her first civvy owner.
All work/receipts logged from then to date. In the first year of civvy ownership £5,533.22 spent to re-commission.
Purchased by me in October 2016. First owner had spent £7,746.40 on her which included electronic ignition, Fairey Overdrive and a Stage One Turner Head to help her get along in the modern world. Up to date of advert…January 2025…her receipts for spares/work total £11,547.80. She has always been looked after by L/R specialists, Landranger Stockport/Middlewich and kept in original condition, no campervan convertors allowed near her.
The previous owner had an answer to camping with her, tailor made covers for the stretcher rails allowing mattress and storage space (Laycorn box, see below) to be placed in the back, see photos. Stick a 9x9 on the back and no need for stupid surgery on the bodywork to make a ‘Camper’ ggrrrr.
Also asleep in the back there are 2 injured squaddies that will need looking after plus….New stretcher roof rack covers fitted, Red Cross stencil, 1977 F/A kit, military tools/box, 2 ton jack (Original issue one in nearside locker) workshop manuals, Laycorn storage bin, steering lock, tow rope (Hand made by a Merchant Navy Captain!!) plus many boxes of screws, bolts etc.
She wintered in Kendal over 2023-24 having some electrical re-wiring/new parts at Phil Benson’s auto electrics garage and then off to Gibsons of Kendal, L/R specialists, for an inspection and full service, no problems. Reluctant sale due to a deteriorating spinal condition which is inhibiting safe and comfortable driving, if not for this, she would not be offered for sale.
Current mileage is nearly 55,000 and photos show a lot of body spares which will come with her, her current guaranteed insurance value from a military vehicle specialist is £15,000.
This fine example of a British military ambulance can be used for displays, rallies, poppy collections (She helped to raise over £2,000 last year) or just exhibited as a road tax and MOT exempt iconic veteran military vehicle.
